Rules and Regulations for IMechE-UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Design Competition


Term and Conditions

In simple terms, this competition is basically where students will have to write a proposal on an idea or method where they can improve the engine or the aerodynamics of the UNITEN Shell-Eco Challenge Car. No complicated figures or ideas are required as we are looking for any simple but workable idea. For more information on the type of engine please refer to number 4. 1.      Participation
·         This competition is open to ALL ENGINEERING students of UNITEN to present the UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Team your ideas for future implementation.

·         This competition challenges students to come forth with their most creative and innovative ideas to improve the travel distance of the Urban concept car with 1 litre of fuel

·         Participants are highly recommended to form a team of 3 for this competition.

·         Participants are to only choose one of the modifications they would like to take part in namely the engine modification or the aerodynamics modification.

·         A limit of 10 teams for both modification segments will apply. Once the limit has been reached, the organizing teams will not be accepting any more entries.

·         All entries for this competition should be typed out in a form of a proposal adhering to the academic rules (ie. Font-Arial, font size-12, line spacing-1.5, references and appendices.)

·         Proposals are should not exceed 12 pages. (Front cover, table of contents, references, appendices, pictures and the back cover are not a part of the above mentioned page constrains.)

·         All entries must be submitted via email to imeche.uniten@gmail.com by the 14th of January 2011. Any submission after the 14th of January 2011 will not be entertained.

2.      Proposal
·         Proposal of your ideas should adhere to the following aspects;
i.                    Cover page which includes team members’ names and student ID, and a clear identification of which segment of modification you are participating in.
ii.                  Use Arial font of size 12 and at least 1.5 line spacing.
iii.                Supporting facts and figures are encouraged to be included in your proposal.
iv.                Technical drawings are also encouraged to be included.


3.      Competition
·         This competition focuses on the modifications in both engine and aerodynamics of an Urban concept car to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
·         Ideas proposed will be judged based on language and significance to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
·         Ideas proposed may be implemented in the future Urban concept car.
·         ImechE-UNITEN and UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Team reserves the rights to change the rules and regulations without prior notice.
·         All decisions made are final and are at the judges’ absolute discretion.

4.      Modification constrains
i.                    Engine
·         A Honda GX160, 4 stroke engine will be used in the Urban concept car
·         Any modifications may fall in any part of the engine used above (ie. piston, crankshaft, pulley, engine block, transmission, clutch etc.)
·         Modifications proposed should improve performance of the Urban concept car without sacrificing fuel efficiency.
·         Articles 51, 63, 64, 70, 72 and 75 of the Chapter 1 Shell Eco-Marathon Official Rules 2011 applies wherever applicable.
·         All modifications must comply to the road safety standards.
ii.                  Aerodynamics
·         Applies to the exterior of the car.
·         CFD simulations (if any) should be included in the appendices of the proposal
·         Articles 48, 49 and 50 of the Chapter 1 Shell Eco-Marathon Official Rules 2011 wherever applicable.
·         All modifications must comply to the road safety standards.
