Changes to eMPDS - 2010

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions on the eMPDS system over the past year. We have been working with the developers to implement many of them and have now launched our upgrade.
The full list of the changes may be found here.
What’s new for Developing Engineers and MPDS mentors?
Developing Engineers will now be able to see who their current mentor is. Mentor details will be present in the developing engineer’s profile and this information will import into quarterly reports.
Specifically for mentor’s; training can now be recorded, for example, mentoring as part of MPDS or work undertaken in becoming conversant with EC UK-SPEC. We recommend that all mentors keep their training up to date by attending some form of training every two years.
Quarterly reports only need to be 200-500 words long. There is no longer an option to allow for the overspill of text. The functionality supports succinct reporting. The ability to upload over 500 words for quarterly reports onto eMPDS will cease to be available from October 31st 2010.
The format of the quarterly report has been adapted and the template now accepts bulleted lists. We encourage developing engineers to submit quarterly reports in this format, using bulleted lists with an explanation of what work has been undertaken. Quarterly reports using this revised format will be accepted as part of an application for professional registration. Quarterly reports that are written in the first person narrative will also still be accepted.
From 1st October 2010, the format for submission of a professional development application will need to include the most recent four quarterly reports, the penultimate annual assessment report and the final annual assessment report.

eMPDS tip of the month

Short and Sweet - Keep to the word limit
All quarterly reports now have a word limit ranging from 200 – 500 words per section. The reason for this is to help you demonstrate competence D - Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills. Communicating effectively and concisely how you have met the UK-SPEC competences is an important skill that needs to be demonstrated before gaining Full Membership and Professional Registration.

Beat the winter blues with IMechE
In this bumper edition of the newsletter, our last in 2010, we take a look at the graduate scheme at Jaguar Land Rover. We also announce the new IMechE Online Bookstore, and discuss the future of transport in Europe for our Topic of the Month.

IMechE Member Profile
Helen Jackson, Graduate at Jaguar Land Rover and IMechE Young Members Board member
Why did you decide to apply to Jaguar Land Rover?
I wanted to work for an iconic business in the automotive industry. The graduate scheme at the company is really well structured, and I knew I'd get the training I need to develop my skills further.
What was the interview process like?
The interview process is set up to mirror situations you may come across in your career with the company. My top tip would be to do your research. Make sure that you read as much as you can about the company and the skills that they're looking for before you apply.
What's the most exciting thing you've worked on so far?
I was part of the team developing the high performance brake system for the Jaguar XK, which was great fun. The work I'm doing now will contribute to reducing the carbon emissions of our vehicles in the future.
What do you think is the most important benefit of your IMechE membership?
From the moment I decided to become an engineer, becoming chartered was a priority. In order to raise the profile of the profession we all need to go the extra mile to demonstrate our skills
Shift your career up a gear
There's been a lot of talk of graduate unemployment in recent months, but there are still excellent opportunities out there for graduates who know where to look. As part of our commitment to supporting our student members, we got the inside track from Laura Wigley, Graduate Recruitment Consultant for Jaguar Land Rover, one of the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers:
What will graduates get out of the scheme at JLR?
Our graduate scheme is designed to provide the right blend of technical expertise, personal development and know-how. All graduates go through an induction, which includes first-hand experience of our product line-up, and insights into our dealership organisation and production lines.
What do you look for in a successful applicant?
Successful applicants have a good understanding of the company and our industry, along with a passion for the area they want to work in. In engineering roles we also look for a depth and breadth of relevant technical knowledge.
How many graduates will you be employing in 2011?
We are looking to take on 135 graduates in September 2011. We are also recruiting for 25 Undergraduate Placements starting in June 2011.
- Starting salary £27,000
- 25 days holiday plus statutory days
- Discounted new car purchase scheme
- Competitive Pension Plan

Deadline for applications: 31st December 2010. Read more.
IMechE is your study buddy
This month we're celebrating the launch of the IMechE online bookstore. We know how important it is for you to get the books you need at the best price possible, so we've price matched against the market leader for online book retailing. You don't need to set up an account to browse the bookshop - just log in with your IMechE account details and you're ready to go. If you just want to browse engineering books, remember the IMechE virtual library is just a few clicks away, and you can even get books from our catalogue delivered to your door!
Topic of the Month - Planes, trains or automobiles?
Engineers in Switzerland recently broke through the last few metres of rock for the new Gotthard base tunnelrunning deep under the Alps. We asked you which mode of transport would define Europe over the coming decades. Ahmed Storm, Talha Aijaz and Henry Lo agree that trains will dominate, but Gregory Atkin suggests that "people are going to stick to cars and budget airlines thanks to the price of trains". Bhavick Bhatia even made the confident prediction that maglevs (magnetic levitated trains) are the future! Tell us what you think on the IMechE Facebook™ page.

Seize golden opportunities with IMechE this Autumn
The IMechE hosts events for its members all through the year, and these are an excellent way to meet your fellow engineers and enhance your CV; have you been involved in one yet? In this month's newsletter, we interview Team Bath Racing Project Manager Tom Yates about Formula Student, find out how you can get involved in IMechE events, and get the lowdown on September's Cardboard Boat Regatta in Portsmouth.
IMechE Member Profile
Thomas Yates, University of Bath student, Project Manager for Team Bath Racing at Formula Student
Why did you decide to join the IMechE?
I enjoyed a number of presentations they gave on various subjects, including Flybrid engines and Formula One, plus membership enabled me to compete in the Formula Student competition.
How did you get involved with Team Bath Racing?
I saw them at UCAS tours and knew immediately that I wanted to be involved. I found the Bath team within my first week at uni, offered to help build a car jack, and the rest is history!
What did you enjoy most about this year's Formula Student?
Hearing the fantastic roar of Team Bath's twin exhaust car in the dynamic events (Officially the loudest at 109dB!)
How has being involved in Formula Student benefitted you?
Thanks to the nature of the project, I've picked up lots of skills and experience for my future career; including management, marketing and presentation, team building and self-discipline.
Would you recommend other young engineers get involved in the program?
I would 100% recommend the project, it's a fantastic experience and looks great on your CV! If you're looking to manage a team, make sure you prepare by learning all you can about the event and teams involved.

IMechE makes a splash in Plymouth
Earlier this month, several teams of young engineers descended on Plymouth for the inaugural IMechE "Cardboard Boat Regatta". Run by the Devon and Cornwall YMP, and sponsored by Babcock International andCardboard Future Limited, the event saw the teams competing to design, build and then race their boats at Mayflower Sailing Club. 'The Short Planks' won the hotly-contested race on the day in front of hundreds of spectators, with prizes also awarded for a range of achievements including "Most Impressive Sinking". Pictures from the day and a full run down on all action can be found on the IMechE website.
Topic of the month – Charging ahead with transport technology
After decades of failed attempts to introduce electric vehicles into the mainstream, manufacturers worldwide are investing in headline-grabbing models. Jaguar recently unveiled their new C-X75 at the Paris Motor Show, a 200mph supercar with compact turbines and four electric motors, and we asked you whether you thought this would change the face of the industry. Many IMechE members have been positive about the car, with Mohammed Shadab predicting "it will work and it is eco friendly", whilst others like Mike Wilkinson and Yatine Nirvan highlight the car's astronomical price tag and potential problems with the limited range of a single battery charge. With more affordable vehicles, including the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt available in the coming months, it will be interesting to see whether consumers become confident in this technology.
