Industrial Visit To SIRIM AMT Centre

It's been quite some time since we have had an industrial visit. The last industrial visit was last semester when we went to Proton. Much knowledge was gained from that trip. Now it's time again for another industrial visit. This time we will be visiting SIRIM's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre located in Bukit Jalil. Don't pass up this chance. Places are limited, so do reply fast. Details are in the poster below.

A Double First For UNITEN Elite

For the first time ever, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has scored a double first. Not only will a UNITEN team make it to the ImechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) finals in London next month, they will also be the first a team outside of UK to do so. Indeed, UNITEN ELITE team members Dominic Hua Shi Hao, Lim See Beng, Ghoulesh and Tan Pong Seng have done the University proud. Come 5th March 2009, they are one of the six shortlisted for the final battling to be crowned as champions in the ‘Cooling the Planet’ World Final at ImechE in London, England.

The ‘Cooling the Planet’ challenge is an opportunity for young engineers to showcase their skills and demonstrate the roles engineering play in solving global warming issues. Participating teams will be competing to present feasible engineering alternatives to reverse the effects of the phenomena. The UNITEN team’s project titled ‘Carbon Capturing Storage’ is competing against two other London-based teams, Faber Maunsell and Buro Happold in the Mitigation Approach category. The other category, the Geo-engineering Approach, is made up of three all-UK teams. UNITEN managed to beat participants in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific by emerging winners in the Asia Pacific regional heats in December 2008.

Winners for this event will receive 500 pounds for each team member. Besides that, consultations will be offered by Climate Scientist and experts in making the winning idea a reality. The winning solution will also become part of Imeche’s environmental strategy and promoted to the media, policy makers and the general public. As such, the Final Competition is feted to be a big one which will be attended by British members of Parliament, professors and top companies. Kudos to UNITEN ELITE!!

IMechE 'Cooling the Planet' Final

Afternoon All!

Only one month to go and the final will be upon us! So encouraging young members to come along to the event is very high on our agenda at the moment.

Marketing have updated the site to include a link whereby people can register to attend the final on the afternoon of 5th March:

http://www.imeche.org/about/keythemes/environment/Climate+Change/Cooling+the+Planet+competition/Cooling+the+Planet+Final.htm

The email address for registration; environment@imeche.org will not be going to me and so I need you all to register yourselves and your teams as well as encouraging your friends, colleagues, employers etc to sign up and come along. And if you register by 25th Feb, you will be included in the catering order, so make sure you don’t miss out on that free food!

In addition I can report that Phil Willis MP, who chaired the IUS Select Committee in geo-engineering, will be awarding the prize certificates on the day

Finally, just a quick reminder that the deadline for your submissions to Colin Brown is this Friday.

Good luck with your final preparation,

Chris Cox

Cooling the Planet Final

Cooling the Planet Final

The Final

After strong competition, 'Cooling the Planet' reaches its crucial final stages with the last six teams battling it out to be crowned as champions.

Global warming remains a real threat, and we have been extremely encouraged by the work that the six teams of young engineers have put into assessing ideas about how to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on future climate.
Register now for the Final!

We welcome delegates to attend the final of the Cooling the Planet competiton at the Institution's Birdcage Walk headquarters in London on 5 March 2009.
For further information or to join us for the final
The Final Six

From an extremely stong field of entrants, six finalists emerged. Three of the teams have presented geo-engineering approahces and three have presented mitigation approaches:

Geo-engineering category

  1. Artificial Trees - entry from team based at STFC, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, UK
  2. Building Integrated Biofuel from Algae – entry from BH Young Engineers based at Buro Happold in London, UK
  3. Reflective Roofing - entry from team based at Jaguar Land Rover in Coventry/Warwick, UK

Mitigation category

  1. Carbon capture and storage – entry from team based at the Tenaga Nasional University, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia
  2. Biogas CHP - entry from Team Glow based at Buro Happold in Bath, UK
  3. Waste to Biochar Hydro-Pyrolysis – entry from Planet AECOM based at Faber Maunsell in London, UK

The Final Task

For the final, all six teams will be assessed on the feasibility of their chosen approach to 'Cooling the Planet' and will have to present their findings to a judging panel. This will consist of engineers with a very strong technical expertise, and media/MPs/policy makers/general public who will be well placed to see how good the teams are at explaining their approach to a wider, non-technical audience.

To make their approach accessible to technical and non-technical judges alike, the teams will be required to:

* produce a written technical report of their assessment
* make a 10 minute powerpoint presentation followed by 5 minute Q&A session
* produce a one page hand out of the assessment for a non-technical audience

Judging Panel

Confirmed judges so far include:

  • Dr Colin Brown, IMechE Director of Engineering (Chair)
  • Professor Tim Lenton, Professor of Earth System Science, University of East Anglia
  • Dave Watson, Head of Environment and Sustainability – Engineering, United Utilities
  • Chris Cox, Renewable Energy Team, E.ON Engineering, E.ON UK
The Final Day

The final will take place at the Institution's Birdcage Walk head office in London on 5 March 2009. The winning approach will then become part of the Institution’s environmental strategy, and promoted to the media, policy makers and the general public.
