Rules and Regulations for IMechE-UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Design Competition

Term and Conditions

In simple terms, this competition is basically where students will have to write a proposal on an idea or method where they can improve the engine or the aerodynamics of the UNITEN Shell-Eco Challenge Car. No complicated figures or ideas are required as we are looking for any simple but workable idea. For more information on the type of engine please refer to number 4. For more information the aerodynamics of the car drop us an e-mail at imeche.uniten@gmail.com and we will send you more graphical information.

1.      Participation

·         This competition is open to ALL ENGINEERING students of UNITEN to present the UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Team your ideas for future implementation.

·         This competition challenges students to come forth with their most creative and innovative ideas to improve the travel distance of the Urban concept car with 1 litre of fuel

·         Participants are highly recommended to form a team of 3 for this competition.

·         Participants are to only choose one of the modifications they would like to take part in namely the engine modification or the aerodynamics modification.

·         A limit of 10 teams for both modification segments will apply. Once the limit has been reached, the organizing teams will not be accepting any more entries.

·         All entries for this competition should be typed out in a form of a proposal adhering to the academic rules (ie. Font-Arial, font size-12, line spacing-1.5, references and appendices.)

·         Proposals are should not exceed 12 pages. (Front cover, table of contents, references, appendices, pictures and the back cover are not a part of the above mentioned page constrains.)

·         All entries must be submitted via email to imeche.uniten@gmail.com by the 14^th of January 2011. Any submission after the 14^th of January 2011 will not be entertained.

2.      Proposal

·         Proposal of your ideas should adhere to the following aspects;

i.                    Cover page which includes team members’ names and student ID, and a clear identification of which segment of modification you are participating in.

ii.                  Use Arial font of size 12 and at least 1.5 line spacing.

iii.                Supporting facts and figures are encouraged to be included in your proposal.

iv.                Technical drawings are also encouraged to be included.

3.      Competition

·         This competition focuses on the modifications in both engine and aerodynamics of an Urban concept car to improve performance and fuel efficiency.

·         Ideas proposed will be judged based on language and significance to improve performance and fuel efficiency.

·         Ideas proposed may be implemented in the future Urban concept car.

·         ImechE-UNITEN and UNITEN Shell Eco-Marathon Team reserves the rights to change the rules and regulations without prior notice.

·         All decisions made are final and are at the judges’ absolute discretion.

4.      Modification constrains

i.                    Engine

·         A Honda GX160, 4 stroke engine will be used in the Urban concept car

·         Any modifications may fall in any part of the engine used above (ie. piston, crankshaft, pulley, engine block, transmission, clutch etc.)

·         Modifications proposed should improve performance of the Urban concept car without sacrificing fuel efficiency.

·         Articles 51, 63, 64, 70, 72 and 75 of the Chapter 1 Shell Eco-Marathon Official Rules 2011 applies wherever applicable.

·         All modifications must comply to the road safety standards.

ii.                  Aerodynamics

·         Applies to the exterior of the car.

·         CFD simulations (if any) should be included in the appendices of the proposal

·         Articles 48, 49 and 50 of the Chapter 1 Shell Eco-Marathon Official Rules 2011 wherever applicable.

·         All modifications must comply to the road safety standards.

Here is how you can take part in this competition;

• Form a group of 3 with any engineering students in UNITEN.
• Coose a segment which you want to participate in as a team
• Write us a proposal of your ideas in not more than 12 pages with supporting facts and figures.
• Send your completed proposal to imeche.uniten@gmail.com with the heading “Shell Eco-Marathon” by the 14th of January 2011
• The judges will evaluate your proposal in various aspects such as language, idea proposal, application with supporting facts and how your idea is going to affect both performance and fuel comsumption
• Winners of each segment will be announce on the 25th of January 2011 at BM-0-010 (8pm-9.30pm) and certificates for all participants will be presented on the same day.

 
General Rules of Participation

• One team must only choose one competition segment.
• Proposal must be type out following the educational rules (ie. Arialfont, font size 12 and minimum spacing of 1.5).
• Proposal shall comprise or title, team members, table of contents and supporting facts and figures pertaining to your proposed ideas.
• Modifications to engine parts should improve performance of the car without sacrificing fuel efficiency.
• Aerodynamics modifications should improve airflow around the vehicle, reduce drag coefficient, increase in down force etc.
• All modifications in must comply with road standard regulations.
• Technical drawings are highly recommended to be submitted

RULES & REGULATIONS


1. Deadline for registration is 11 October 2010. Price giving and submission of models is on the 15th October will give the teams ample time to prepare accordingly (2 weeks)

2. The prototypes built and the team's presentation will be judged based on the marking scheme. The decision of the judges are final.

3. Teams are not allowed to alter/fix/improvise/upgrade/add-on etc. after they have submitted their final product on the day of the competition.

4. Teams cannot use items that are pre-assembled. Pre-assembled items include figurine models (GUNDAM, etc), electrical components.

5. Teams are permitted to use spray paints or any equivalent types to 'touch-up' their prototypes.

6. The committee deserves the right to reject or disqualify competitors if they are found to have not adhered to the rules.

7. The committee deserves the right to keep in their possession any or all of the submitted items. Participant(s) are allowed to keep their submitted models under certain circumstances.

8. The final product of the prototype must be submitted at the end of the competition period in a single form of item. All detachable parts must remain in their particular housing or frame.

9. Teams are advised to be disciplined otherwise they will be penalized. Teams are not allowed to convey any form of sarcasm, taunts or outright remarks to other teams , the judges, and the committee during the competition.

10. Teams are encouraged to be creative and innovative in choosing their materials and construction methods. More marks will be allocated for teams that take the initiative to use recyclable items to manufacture their products and also based on the complexity of the model.

11. Teams cannot use dangerous items to construct their models. Dangerous items include sharp objects, flammable liquids, poisonous metal/organic/in-organic products.


STRUCTURE

In this category, you are required to construct a model of ANY structure that is of interest to you and your team; You will be judged based on the level of complexity and creativity. The model cannot be larger than 1m x 1m x 1m

TRANSPORTATION

In this category, you are required to construct a model of ANY automobile that is of interest to you and your team; You will be judged based on the level of complexity and creativity. The model cannot be larger than 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.5m

PRIZE MONEY: RM125

E-Challenge Competition

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is having their Engineering Fest from the 29th of January 2010 till the 5th of February 2010. They have invited us, UNITEN students to participate in the E-Challenge. The details are as below:

Date: 30th to 31st January 2010

Time: 9am - 5pm

Place: Batu Pahat Mall

Fees: RM30 per team of three people (transportation is not included)

Prize: RM 400 for each category

This competition aims to expose students to the real business environment in which students will apply the marketing strategies and communication skills with the community around Batu Pahat. UMEC 2009

It gives us great pleasure to announce that IMECHE Student Chapter of Uni. Tenaga Nasional will be having our very first UNITEN Mechanical Engineering Competition 2009/10 (UMEC '09/10) from (19th February 2010 - 21st February 2010). So, calling all mechanical students from various government and private insitutes in Malaysia, sign up soon as possible if intrested as places are limited to 10 team's only. Entries will be considered at a first come first serve basis.

This competition will be held at University Tenaga Nasional (Putrajaya Campus). Among the main aim of the competition is to strengthen ties between mechanical engineering student from various government and private institutes in Malaysia.

The Young Members Section is proud to announce that we are now accepting entriesfor the "Speak Out for Engineering" presentation competition!

This competition is open to all IMechE Young Members. Just give a speech on any mechanical engineering topic of your choice and stand to win £200 and a chance to represent Malaysia in the IMechE Asia-Oceania Regional Finals to be held in Singapore next year.

Pro-Engineering Challenge 2009

Cooling the Planet Competition

A team of students from the University Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) represented Malaysia for the ‘Cooling the Planet’ competition final. This event took place at the IMeche‘s headquarters in London on the 5^th March 2009. UNITEN team has made Malaysia and UNITEN proud by advancing into the final three teams in the mitigation category and was the only team outside UK who qualified the overall final of 6 teams.

The main objective of ‘Cooling the Planet’ competition are to find alternative solutions in reducing greenhouse gas levels and maintain the heat balance where global warming is a real threat in future. Teams of young engineers from around the world took part and presented practicable “geo-engineering” and “mitigation” solutions.

UNITEN’s team, comprising Dominic Hua Shi Hao (Leader), Lim See Beng, Ghokulesh Satkuna Nasan and Tan Pong Seng have made their presentation titled “Carbon capture and storage (CCS).” They did a great job providing solution in wide scope of context.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a technology that reduces the amount of CO₂reaching the atmosphere by capturing the gas at the point of emission and transporting it to a suitable underground storage location (for example depleted oil and gas reservoirs) where it is sequestered permanently. Since the use of fossil fuels for power generation is widely regarded as inevitable for the foreseeable future, CCS technology is seen by many as offering a potentially significant contribution to mitigation.
