The IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the 4th of August 2009. It was held in room BW-G-R05 of College of Information Technology. The purpose of the AGM was mainly to introduce the new line-up of the committee to the members of this chapter to the members.

There were 21 people who attended the AGM although all the members were notified about the meeting. The amount of attendees was exceptional due to some unforeseen circumstances. The VIP for the day was IMechE UNITEN Student Chapter advisor, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris.

The AGM began at 9.00pm with the arrival of Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris. The MC for the day, Roger Yang Yong Seng started the AGM by welcoming the members present there.

Then, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris was invited to give his speech. Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris talked about the mechanical department being the stepping stone to get international accreditations. Also, he touched on how he knows a few of the incoming committee members personally and that they are capable people not only when it comes to studies.

After the speech, Nicholas was on stage to call up the incoming committee members. All the incoming committee members came up on stage and then introduced themselves with their designated posts.

The AGM was then continued with the presentation of certificates to the outgoing committee. Unfortunately not all the outgoing committee members were present. Due to this, Andrew Lew Fei Meng, Joshua Ooi Xu Jun, Lau Jian Xiong and Lim Doou Han represented the outgoing committee in receiving the certificates which was presented by Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Azree bin Idris. The AGM was then ended and dinner was served.

The AGM ended at 9.30pm with dinner between the new committee and the members. The AGM went well despite below-than-expected number of members attending the meeting.

Date: 21st – 22nd July 2009
Time: 5.30pm – 11.00pm

IMechE UNITEN Student Chapter participated in the Clubs and Societies Bazaar 2009 which was held on the 21st July to 22nd 2009 in UPTEN food court. The Bazaar was a drive to recruit more members into the society besides giving an early exposure to the junior members on the benefits of becoming a part of the student chapter as well as the IMECHE UK. We were given booth number 15, located on the left corner of UPTEN food court. Each committee member was subjected to a minimum of two hours of duty at the booth to promote the society to the visitors.

The event started at 5.30p.m on the 21st July followed by an officiating ceremony by the VVIP at 7.50p.m. Flyers were given out to the visitors and our committee members managed to gather a big crowd to the IMECHE booth. Turn out for the first day was overwhelming as we managed to recruit 51 new members into the society. Another 21 students managed to upgrade their membership to Affiliate members of IMECHE UK. The first day of the bazaar ended at 11.00p.m with some entertaining performance from participating clubs and societies.

The bazaar continued for the second day at 5.30p.m. 32 new members successfully registered to be a part of the Student Chapter. The event came to an end at 11.00p.m with the summary of the 2 days event by the program director. In whole, the turnout of membership drive was overwhelming as we have 83 new members in the society now. The support and cooperation given by the committee members is much appreciated. Hopefully the Student Chapter will be able to carry out all the upcoming events with great success along with full support of the members.

Report on IMechE Membership Drive Talk & Ice-breaking Session

Venue: College of Engineering (BL – Theater)
Date: 24th July 2009 (Friday)
Time: 2.30 to 5.30 p.m.

By: Roger Yang Yong Seng

Last Friday on the 24th of July the IMECHE Student Chapter of UNITEN held its membership drive talk which took place in the BL lecture hall College of Engineering. The talk is intended to introduce students to IMECHE and also the recent inception of IMECHE Student Chapter Committee in UNITEN.

The speaker for the day was the Chairman of YMS (Young Member) Dr. Rajkumar Durairaj. Also present were IMECHE Student Chapter supervisors, Ir. Dr. Ramesh Singh and Mr. Tan Chou Yong. Emcee for the day was Roger Yang Yong Seng, the vice-president of the IMECHE Student Chapter.

Although attendance was not encouraging due to unforeseen circumstances, the objective of the event was achieved as 7 foundation students were given exposure to the IMECHE as an engineering organisation. Dr. Rajkumar’s presentation was short and distinct highlighting the benefits of becoming a member of the IMECHE and the road to getting a chartered engineer status and its significance.

The Q&A session was opened to the floor as questions were poured in by fellow students. At the end of the talk, Dr. Tan Chou Yong, the advisor of the club was invited to present a token of appreciation to Dr. Rajkumar. Students and the guests were invited to a light refreshment.

The ice-breaking session commenced right after that where students were given chance to get to know the committee members of the IMECHE Student Chapter. This was important as bridge the social gaps between the committee members and the students so that the committee members will be able to serve for the club at the expense of themselves and the students’ for their own advantage.
