Dear Members,

Here is the link of the Dominic Hua's success in the recent SOFE National Finals in which Dominic Hua (from IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter) had emerged as the National Champion and will be representing Malaysia for the Asia-Pacific Regional Finals in April 2009. This year's Asia-Pacific Regional Finals will be held in our beloved country, Malaysia. The previous finals were held in Australia and Hong Kong in 2008 and 2007. Details of the date and venue will be updated soon. We wish Dominic Hua the very best in carrying the 'Jalur Gemilang' and hopefully he will make the country proud. Till then, Happy New Year 2009 and let's pray for more success for UNITEN and IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

20 December 2008

Season Greetings from IMechE President

Dear Colleague,

The past year has been a time of change and development for the Institution. Notable milestones have included;

* The launch of Engeneration, a membership network for school children studying engineering and a key component of our commitment to inspire the next generation
* The highest level of media coverage in the history of the Institution
* The highest number of paying events, with over 6000 seats sold in 2008
* Membership growth of 3% in 2008 (this when many other Institutions have been reducing)
* The largest awarding body for CEng, for the second year running
* International developments in India and China
* An outstanding Vision Awards Ceremony
* Increased links with key players in Government at both Westminster and Edinburgh.

2008 has also been a year of dramatic change beyond the world of engineering with the credit crisis and banking collapse causing unprecedented economic upheaval. This will impact us all in the year ahead but it has been encouraging to note the growing realisation among politicians and business leaders that the economy of the future should be based on real engineering as opposed to financial engineering.

The global challenges we face as a society will not be resolved without the expert contributions of engineers and that remains our challenge and opportunity.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a peaceful and joyous Christmas season and a successful year ahead in 2009.

Best wishes

Professor William M Banks
President

'Cooling the Planet' in Parliament!

Dear members,

You will be pleased to know that the young members' 'Cooling the Planet' competition featured in a parliamentary committee enquiry on geo-engineering last Monday afternoon.

The link below will take you to a video that shows me giving evidence to the committee on behalf of the Institution and the competition came up several times during the 50 minute session; the main discussion about it being after around 30 minutes when one of the committee members asks me directly about the activity. We are having impact already, and we have only just started, so please say well done to those young members in your groups that are participating.

I am sure this is just a taster of what is to come in terms of political influence (according to our political affairs people, the competition was a key driver in the committee asking us to come forward to the oral session).

http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/VideoPlayer.aspx?meetingId=2832

In addition I have attached a news piece about our participation in the enquiry which will be placed on the front page of the IMechE website later today.

Kind regards,
Secretariat,

IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter Talk Series :Computational Science and Engineering for Discovery

Date :
22 October 2008 (Wednesday)

Time :
4.30 pm to 5.30 pm

Venue:
BW-G-R19 (Lecture Theatre)

Speaker:
Prof. Hasan U. Akay
(Chancellor’s Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean
School of Engineering and Technology
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), USA)

Title of Talk:
Computational Science and Engineering for Discovery

Synopsis:

It is recognized today that the scientists and engineers of this century will be expected to solve problems of unprecedented complexities defining the natural phenomena which can only be solved with computer simulations. While the analytical solutions of these problems will not be possible due to complexity of the equations defining them, it will also be very difficult, if not impossible, to conduct experiments for most of them. These simulations need algorithm complexities and computing powers of unprecedented magnitudes in speed and memory, which will not be overcome by one discipline or one organization alone. As a result, computational science and engineering (CSE) has emerged during the last decade as an indispensable part of scientific and engineering investigations, where the emphasis is on the computation of science rather than the science of computation (i.e., CSE is different than computer science or computer engineering) . Parallel to this, scientific and engineering organizations in many developed countries have been investing heavily on building scientific and engineering computing environments called computing grids for shared usage of resources. These grids are formed by connecting the computer systems at geographically distant locations with fiber optics networks and are administered by various alliances. Mostly targeted for massive data sharing, research, and development, such grid alliances are designed to form community of researchers and educators sharing the hardware and software resources, expertise, and knowledge for scientific discoveries. While the parallel computing algorithms developed by subdividing a large problem into smaller parts and solving each part concurrently on distributed computer systems have long been used, a new computing paradigm called grid computing has emerged during the recent years to harness the enormous power of such computing grids. This has brought many opportunities as well as challenges. One such resource is the TeraGrid supported by the National Science Foundation in USA which houses more than 100 teraflops of computing power distributed at nine sites with facilities capable of data, high-resolution visualization environments, and tools for grid computing. There are already plans to extend the capabilities towards the petaflops level. Indiana and Purdue Universities are two of the sites of this alliance, while IUPUI is the Network Operations Center (NOC) of the facilities. In this talk, in addition to the overview of CSE degree programs and how they can be integrated into traditional engineering and science programs, we will give an overview of the challenges and opportunities brought by the grid computing technology. Experiences gained at the IUPUI Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory for solving large-scale computational fluid dynamics problems on the grid will be shared.

Report on IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter Lecture: Power Generation

Venue: BM-010 Lecture Hall

Date: 26th September 2008

Time: 3 pm – 5 pm

By: Ghokulesh

Last Friday on the 26th of September 2008 IMechE organized the second lecture in the series entitled Power Generation and Career Opportunities. The lecture was held in the Student Lecture Hall in UNITEN’s engineering faculty. The invited speaker was Ir Fam Yew Hin, who is a Registered Professional Engineer with BEM and a Corporate Member of IEM . The talk serves to introduce students to power generation, an area of utmost important for it provides electricity and ensure uninterrupted economic activity of a nation. Attendance was encouraging despite many students have returned hometown for preparation of Hari Raya.

During the lecture, Mr Yew Hin introduce us on methods that are used today to generate power; thermal power generation (steam and gas turbine, combined cycle gas turbine) and geothermal system, hydroelectric, wind turbine, solar power system, and nuclear power generation. He explained and elaborated on the most widely used power generation, which are the steam and gas power plant in Malaysia. This is enumerated through the statistics displayed regarding the percentage of power generated from respective methods; gas 66%, coal 29%, hydro 5.03%, and others 0.15%.

Mr Yew Hin also explained briefly on the mechanism and principle of operation of each power generation methods. He elaborated on the conventional method in Malaysia, the steam and gas turbine power systems. He also touched on the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT). Their operations were clearly articulated through the diagrams displayed from the laptop slides. He also gave examples of these types of power plants in Malaysia.

We also learn of the economic viability in resorting to these two types of power plants where Mr Yew Hin explained on their pros and cons. The only problem that we face in the long run is the depleting natural resources; coal and oil. These are the two components that our plants run on.

As the talk ended, emcee Tiliban uttered words of appreciation and gratitude to Mr Yew Hin, followed by the giving of souvenir by IMechE President Dominic Hua.
