Cooling Planet Finals in IMechE, Headquarters London

Dear Entrants,
The day has finally arrived for us to post the results for this round of the competition!
Having considered the entries, it was decided to divide the competition in to two strands – Mitigation Technologies (such as CCS) and Geotechnologies (Such as solar reflectors). Each strand has 3 teams continuing into the next round.
Firstly, may I thank you all for your enthusiasm and participation in this competition – it really has been a delight to see so many engineers taking an active interest in such a topical debate. I would also like to commiserate those who haven’t made it though and wish them the best of luck in any later competitions!
So, the part you’ve all been waiting for… The winners are (in no particular order)….
For Mitigation Technologies:
DOMINIC HUA SHI HAO, GHOKULESH SATKUNA NASAN, LIM SEE BENG, TAN PONG SENG for ‘CCS’
Team Glow for Biogas CHP
Planet AECOM for Closing the Carbon Cycle – Waste to Biochar Hydro-Pyrolysis
And for Geotechnology:
Madaser Iqbal, Chris Mann, Maxim Murray, Pete Schofield, Aran Sritharan, Anna Speed for Refelective Roofing
Benjamin Drumm, Paul Raisbeck and Daniel Shackell for Artificial Trees
BH Young Engineers for Building Integrated Biofuel from Algae
So, Congratulations to those of you that have succeeded by making it through to the next round. Below is the briefing document for the final stage.
Also, we are offering a little extra help for this stage for the 3 successful Geoengineering teams. We are arranging for a climate scientist / modeller to be available on a consultancy basis (each team will be allocated a set / finite number of hours) to assist with each teams assessment of the climatic effectiveness and side-effects. We will be providing further details on this the end of this week.
For this next stage, the teams will submit their written deliverables straight to the head of the judging panel, Dr Colin Brown, c_brown@imeche.org. This is to be done by 17:00 GMT on Friday 6th February 2009.
Finally, thank you everyone for your participation in this competition and keep an eye on the news to see what happens next!
Chris Cox
