Report on IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter Lecture: Intellectual Property Scenario

Venue: BM-010 Lecture Hall

Date: 29th August 2008

Time: 3 pm – 5 pm

On the 29th of August 2008 IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter organized the second lecture in the series entitled Intellectual Property (IP) Scenario. The lecture was held in the Student Lecture Hall in UNITEN’s engineering faculty. The invited speaker was Mr. Rahman Zuhri, Senior Executive of Patent Office at SIRIM Berhad. The talk serves to introduce students to the world of intellectual property, an area in which most students are yet to familiarize despite coming across the term in magazines and newspapers. Attendance was encouraging. More students came in as the lecture progresses throughout. Mr Zuhri’s lecture covered a broad range of topics, from areas of designs to literature and arts. Also attended the talk was Associate Professor Ir. Dr Ramesh Singh, one of our student chapter advisors.

Before the talk, the committee had the opportunity to sell and market the Student Chapter T-Shirts at the booth in front of the hall while students filled their names for attendance.

In the lecture, Mr Zuhri explained on various aspects of IP; its functions and purposes, how to obtain protection, basis of protection (the role of government as balancing agent), terms of right (the period of protection), Infringement Conditions. With regards to patent law, Mr Zuhri stressed that the rules are different from one country to another, in which case if a product is patented in Malaysia, it is still required to apply for patent registration in USA for protection in that country. Mr. Zuhri also highlighted on certain areas that involve moral conflict like discovery and health, where he emphasize that discovery is not patentable (species, any natural occurring phenomenon) and the making of a cure is not patentable, too since it comes under obligations to save lives. In other areas of discovery, if there is a hardware solution to which it comes into use for the discovery, the hardware/machine created is patentable. In applying for patent registration, the duration can go from 2 to 4 years. In some cases, there were applications as far as 7 years behind. Students were also introduced to Berne Convention, a convention signed by 162 countries agreeing to protect IPs belonging to citizens among them.

The talk progressed with the Question and Answer Session followed by words of appreciation and gratitude from the talk emcee Suresh a/l Nagappan. The talk ended by souvenir presentation by the IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter President, Dominic Hua Shi Hao.
