We’ll also revisit the recent members’ trip to RAF Valley in Anglesey, talk about a controversial new way to extract natural gas and hear from Muhammad Abdool Carrim, an IMechE member who has completed an industrial placement and an MSc degree.          IMechE Member Profile Muhammad Abdool Carrim, Imperial College MSc Graduate What did you do on your industrial placement? I worked at Mobrey Ltd carrying out tests on the level sensors manufactured by the company. I worked closely with different departments such as Production, R&D, Quality, Sales, Marketing which helped to increase my communication skills as well. Would you recommend doing an industrial placement? Definitely. This has been the best experience throughout my university studies. It confirmed the reasons why I chose to study an engineering course. I enjoyed every minute of it, met people from different backgrounds, and learnt a great deal in terms of practical hands-on engineering. What did you study at university? I chose to do an MSc in Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Imperial College London, and it really built upon my pre-existing knowledge base. How has your IMechE membership helped your career so far? I took up the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) from IMechE for my industrial placement, and I am hoping to carry this on when I find a new job now that I’ve completed my Masters degree. I definitely want to become a Chartered Engineer through IMechE.       Surviving dissertations and project reports As an engineering student, it’s likely that you will need to complete a dissertation or project report at some stage in your academic career. Flying isn’t just for birds IMechE members in North Wales paid a visit to RAF Valleylast month, the jet training base for RAF and Royal Navy pilots. The excellent technical visit included a detailed engineering overview of both generations of the Hawk aircraft. This covered aspects such as service reliability and maintenance regimes, as well as examples of past service failures.  Participants were shocked to learn that the single largest cause of aircraft damage on the station is from bird strikes!  The station tour concluded with a visit to the Flight Line where the group experienced a Hawk returning from a sortie, a pilot debriefing and the plane being checked over and refuelled. IMechE hosts events like this all year round. Find out what’s happening in your local area. New jobs...or new problems?  An energy firm drilling for gas in Lancashire has found vast reserves of up to 20 trillion cubic feet under the county. While extracting the gas could create 5,600 jobs in the UK, campaigners have warned that investing in this fossil fuel could draw investment away from the UK's renewable industry. There are also arguments that the “fracking” extraction process produces harmful carbon emissions and health risks for local residents, while small earthquakes in the area earlier this year were linked to the same procedure. IMechE members suggest that a full risk analysis needs to be undertaken to determine if extracting the gas is the right decision for the UK. For now, however, the topic remains up for debate. Speak Out For Engineering

SOFE is a stage to where you are encouraged to speak to a non technical group of people on your technical ideas as a Mechanical Engineer. A good engineer is a speaking engineer. If you can speak, chances are, you'll go further than others who don't talk as effectively. 

SOFE is basically a technical presentation where your audience will be assumed to be of a non-technical background audience. How do you get common John and Janes to understand your complex engineering idea? That is how you will be judged on. The ability to convey ideas and techniques so that everyone can understand and appreciate your ideas.

Qualifying round will be held in Uniten as follows:

MTU Services (M) Sdn. Bhd Mechanical Workshop

This is a visit to MTU Services Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in Manjung, Perak where participants will participate in a day's worth of workshop on the field of Mechanical. There are a lot to learn and a lot to miss should you have not already register for the trip!

Innopreneur Talk by Robest Yong

Want to know how you can take something ordinary and make it extraordinary? 

Robest Yong is an inventor who has made a living through creating creative products for the consumer market not only in Malaysia but also around the world. Learn how he changed a dish dryer into a successful business idea.

This talk however was done on the 19th October 2011 at 2-3pm in COIT, Uniten. There will be more talks coming up soon so please don't shy away from these talks as an hour or two at most could change the way you see your future, or at least give an idea of how you can make it better!

NDT Lab Visit

To students who are planning to have an outlook of how Non Destructive Testing is before opting for the elective course for their final year in Mechanical Engineering, and also for everyone else who just simply wants to learn, we will be having a visit to an NDT lab soon.

This visit will expose you to the equipment of an NDT as well as the methods often practiced by NDT specialists to test the integrity of structures. 

Most of everyone have already or at least are currently undergoing the Engineering Materials course. You have all learnt about cracks and structural failures. Now see how you can detect these cracks and failures before they even become apparent to the human eye! An NDT is performed everytime a repair or manufacturing work is done to ensure that the structure in fabrication is in perfect condition with no initiation of failures to avoid unwanted incidents in the future. It is as natural to breathing as it is a process in fabrication. 

Date and time will be notified soon once we have the confirmed details regarding the visit but please don't miss this chance as this trip is free for all IMechE members!

UNITEN Malaysia Student Chapter Talk Series

YMS-IMechE Fellowship Evening

On the 30^th of September 2011, after months of planning, Uniten IMechE Student Chapter with the support and guidance from the Young Members Section of the IMechE Malaysia has organized a social gathering aptly named the YMS-IMechE Fellowship Evening, held at the prestigious Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

The event aimed at exposing the students to the broad possibilities that Mechanical Engineering has to offer and how they can contribute to their professional development as well as to the Institution once they have graduated. It is a shame that young engineers are lost after graduation with not a clear picture and idea of how they can enrich their engineering lives, working in dead end jobs and sometimes changing course altogether, wasting the 5 years of their education just because of the lack of exposure on how they can make it better, and greater.

This event was held so that these students can interact with one another from different universities and hopefully in the near future, collaborate in achieving something beneficial to them and the members of the Institution in this country. We hope to see more activities and programs involving the students from all student chapters in Malaysia and not only enclosed to one university at a time.

We were honored to have been presented with the presence of Prof. Dr. Teoh Kok Soo, the Chairman of IMechE Malaysia as well as be able to present the Young Member of The Year 2011 Award to Dr. Rajkumar Durairaj during the evening. We hope that in the future, there will be more achievements of the like from our very own Malaysian Chapter, and this, hopefully, will mark the beginning of such achievement.
