IMechE Engineering Innovation & Design Contest

This calls for another reminder to all interested members of the IMechE. Deadline of the contest submission is drawing to a close! For those who are interested to enrich your engineering lives and stand a chance to win cash and the once in a lifetime opportunity to represent the Mechanical Engineering field of Malaysia in a foreign country, don't forget to submit a brief description of your design project, complete with graphics to help describe your project, all in PDF format.

All you need to do is if your Final Year Projects (Final year degree students) are somewhat related to Green Technology, it could even be ways to sort thrash, just submit a brief project description to help explain your projects to the judging panel. Selected candidates will be asked to present their working prototype by the end of the competition, during the exhibition day which will be on the 22nd of March 2012, in KDU University College.

This is a great opportunity to exhibit what you have worked hard for or even something that you have passion for. Lets help engineer a better future.

Report on National Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Competition 2011

On December 3, 2011, the UNITEN IMechE Student Chapter hosted the National Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Competition 2011 in UNITEN. It was fully supported by the YMS of Malaysia in hope of organizing the annual competition in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere for the benefit of the participants from the engineering community in Malaysia. The event was graced by the presence of the Prof. Teoh Kok Soo, the Chairman of IMechE Malaysia; Dr. Satesh, the Honorary Secretary of IMechE Malaysia.; Mr. Mathew Thomas, committee member of IMechE Malaysia and Dr. Tan Chou Yong, the Chairman of YMS.

In brief, the SOfE Competition is organized annually by the YMS of Malaysia. It is a great platform for individual participants to explore and present their findings of interest in the engineering world to a panel of judges. The deserving winners will be rewarded with cash prizes, whereby the overall winner will receive the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the international level in the IMechE Regional Asia Oceania SOfE Competition. Cash prizes for the first and second-placed winners are wholesome 300 British pounds and 200 British pounds respectively. The previous winner, Mr. Suraj Shergill Singh from UNITEN, had the chance to showcase his knowledge and presentation skills all the way in India at the regional competition.

This year, the panel of judges was formed by three distinguished individuals in their respective fields, namely Prof. Dr. Andanastuti Muchtar from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Dr. Lai Mei I from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Mr. Robest Yong, an innovator from the Agency of Innovation, Malaysia. Facing the established panel of judges were 7 enthusiastic and anxious participants from various higher education institutes in Malaysia, namely:

2) Mohd Harith Mohd Rothi (Taylor’s University)

3) Wan Muhammad Djawad (UNITEN)

4) Nazarul Hisham (Monash University)

5) Yafus Shakeel Siddiqui (Nottingham University)

6) Fathasya Nurul Aishah bt. Izany (UiTM)

7) Edwin Sim (Monash University)

The day began with the participants and judges arriving for registration and light breakfast prepared by the organizing committee of UNITEN to ensure that everyone was ready and hyped for the upcoming competition. Each participant was supported by their respective lecturers and colleagues. This was especially emphasized by a highly supportive delegation of UiTM students in the audience. At 9am, the competition officially began with Mohamed Ackiel Mohamed presenting his topic “A Novel Inverse Finite Element Program for Mechanical Properties of Human Skin”. He incited the interest of everyone in the room with his explanation on extracting the mechanical properties of human skin via reverse engineering. It was especially inspiring due to the lack of relevant information on human skin in the current academia. He ended his presentation on a high note and invitation to all for a visit to UiTM for voluntary skin-testing.

Wan Muhammad Djawad maintained the hype in the room by following with an eye-opening presentation entitled “Kite Wind Energy”. Through a series of illustrations and video, he propagated the fundamental concept of his topic with confidence and further raised the audience awareness in environmental conservation and search of renewable energy sources. According to him, the potential energy to be generated by the kite technology is much efficient and economical if compared to wind turbine technology, an issue with high potential that should be addressed and pondered by the engineering world.

From the interest on skin and kite, the judges and audience were led to the field of magnetic levitation by Nazarul Hisham with his topic “The Applications of Magnetic-levitation”. He introduced the concept of magnetic levitation with real-life examples such as the awe-inspiring Maglev train in Japan and further development of small Maglev vehicle. The judges were much intrigued by his presentation and even enquired on the potential of magnetic levitation vehicles in Malaysia. Nazarul managed to present his ideas with much poise and confidence.

The audience in the room was then introduced to the topic “Gyroscopes: A New Dimension” by Yafus Shakeel Siddiqui. According to Yafus, his motivation on the topic came from a seemingly silly yet interesting activity done by his friend - observing a spinning top on the floor with great interest. Upon questioning, he realized that it was to understand the mechanism of the gyroscopes and its important applications in the current world, from the small yet powerful iPhone 4 to the essential global positioning system (GPS) device used by many, and the discovery of the existence of the fourth dimension in our world, time. Many were awed to know the usage of a simple yet important device upon Yafus’s presentation.

The next participant, Fathasya Nurul Aishah, came confident and casual in her presentation on “Design of Impact Attenuator for EMoC (UiTM Perodua Eco Challenge Car)”. She emphasized on the importance of safety in driving vehicles, especially due to the increasing number of vehicle accidents in Malaysia. She then brought the judges’ attention to the importance and features of the impact attenuator in a vehicle to reduce injuries and damages to both passengers and vehicle. She concluded by stating that the potential commercial implementation of the component would be dependent on the vehicle size and future development on sizing the component.

With Fathasya’s focus on vehicle safety, Edwin Sim followed up with a topic in the same field with his presentation entitled “Electronic Stability Control: The Myth and Effort towards Accident Prevention”. To capture the audience’s attention on the importance of driving safety, Edwin posed various rhetorical questions related to vehicle’s safety features and drivers’ driving competency. He highlighted the importance of combining and balancing both aspects to achieve best effect in driving safety. It was pointed that neither advanced safety technology or car design would be 100% effective in preventing accident if the driver was over-reliant on the technology or lack of the necessary competency.

Mohd Harith Mohd Rothi, as the final participant, delivered a concept-based presentation on “The Concept of CDIO and the Implementation”. With Taylor’s University being the sole institute to be recognized with CDIO in Malaysia currently, Mohd Harith presented his views on the advantages and results that had been produced since the implementation of CDIO in Taylor’s education syllabi. It allowed students to systematically plan, organize and execute their projects or idea, thereby increasing their interest and level of technical competency. He urged for the implementation of such system in the education system for the benefits of all.

The high quality of presentation and knowledge displayed by the participants left the judges with a difficult task. So competitive were the results that the judges had to reconvene and determine the overall, deserving winner to represent Malaysia at the international level. In the end, after much apprehension, Dr. Tan Chou Yong announced that Mohamed Ackiel Mohamed was the first runner-up while Wan Muhammad Djawad was crowned as the overall winner. The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience and participants. Before returning, all attendees were treated to a sumptuous lunch prepared by the committee.

To conclude, with the high quality of presentation and intense competition, the SOfE Competition 2011 was a roaring success for all. Prof. Teoh urged that all students of engineering to be motivated by the opportunity presented by the competition to explore their potential and express themselves on the prestigious platform. It was hoped that the engineering students’ pursuit for technical knowledge and competency would be aligned with an equal development in soft skills to be all-rounded individuals, contributing towards the development of the society.

As the year begins to draw to a close, IMechE is looking to the future—and so should you! In this month’s newsletter we profile Anthony Howarth, an engineering student at the University of Bath. We’ll also discuss how IMechE can help you chart your professional progress with Career Developer and look into the issue of women’s representation in the engineering field in our Topic of the Month.


	IMechE Member Profile Anthony Howarth, Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student at the University of Bath Why did you decide to become an engineer? I’ve wanted to become an engineer from a very young age; engineering is more of a vocation than a job for me. History has been defined by engineering achievements, and I would like to play my part! Why did you decide to use the Career Developer? I started using the Career Developer during a placement year at MBDA Missile Systems in order to track my progress in applying to become a Chartered Mechanical Engineer. I recommend it. How has Career Developer supported you during your studies? The developer allowed me to set goals, track my progress and save evidence to demonstrate completion of objectives. It provided a great way to communicate with my mentor who was based abroad for the year. The competencies checklist helped to identify areas in which I needed to gain experience or improve my abilities. What advice do you have for students in their third or fourth year of engineering programmes? Do lots of research into companies you’d be interested in working for when you graduate – there are so many out there, and your dream job might take a bit of searching.

The Challenge of Concorde Concorde still ignites the passion of many engineers, despite the fact that it is no longer in active service. This was clearly demonstrated at the hugely oversubscribed “Concorde: The Challenges and Thrills” lecture held in the Rolls-Royce Heritage Museum, Derby on 20th October. IMechE members were captivated with a presentation given by former Concorde pilot, Les Evans, reviewing Concorde’s technological features with his own experience of the quirks and delights of flying - such as the art of overfilling the fuel tanks and the ever-present danger to the Captain’s hat! We’re hoping Les will join us again in 2012 to share more of his experience, next time focusing on why Concorde was taken out of service and a look ahead to the future of supersonic civil aircraft. To keep an eye out for this or to look for other events like this in your area.
Untapped Resource Despite women making up more than half of the population, the percentage of UK female engineers is only around 8 percent - the lowest in Europe! So why are they so under-represented? UK women have broken into other traditionally male-dominated sectors, but many say there is something about engineering that makes it the toughest for women to be accepted. IMechE says women with engineering potential are an untapped resource that could plug the skills gap. The engineering industry can no longer afford to exclude over 51% of the population. We asked for your views on the matter and were overwhelmed by the responses! Alexandra Marshall said that “until there are more female role models in a wider cultural/media catchment, young girls are just not going to consider engineering.” Philip Booth countered that “women perform as well as men do. I don't think we need to encourage or target women to apply. We need to focus on getting more engineers in the workplace; men and women.” This really was a great debate and we loved hearing your view. Have your say on the IMechE Facebook page!

Shift your career into gear this month

University is back in full swing, and so is IMechE, with many exciting new initiatives to kickstart your academic year. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll show you how to survive dissertations and project reports. We’ll also revisit the recent members’ trip to RAF Valley in Anglesey, talk about a controversial new way to extract natural gas and hear from Muhammad Abdool Carrim, an IMechE member who has completed an industrial placement and an MSc degree.


	IMechE Member Profile Muhammad Abdool Carrim, Imperial College MSc Graduate What did you do on your industrial placement? I worked at Mobrey Ltd carrying out tests on the level sensors manufactured by the company. I worked closely with different departments such as Production, R&D, Quality, Sales, Marketing which helped to increase my communication skills as well. Would you recommend doing an industrial placement? Definitely. This has been the best experience throughout my university studies. It confirmed the reasons why I chose to study an engineering course. I enjoyed every minute of it, met people from different backgrounds, and learnt a great deal in terms of practical hands-on engineering. What did you study at university? I chose to do an MSc in Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Imperial College London, and it really built upon my pre-existing knowledge base. How has your IMechE membership helped your career so far? I took up the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) from IMechE for my industrial placement, and I am hoping to carry this on when I find a new job now that I’ve completed my Masters degree. I definitely want to become a Chartered Engineer through IMechE.

Surviving dissertations and project reports As an engineering student, it’s likely that you will need to complete a dissertation or project report at some stage in your academic career. At IMechE, we have the tools to help you produce an outstanding piece of work. Just visit our website to find specific pages dedicated to helping you succeed. With our simple tips on choosing a topic, researching and then writing your dissertation or report, you can stay ahead of the curve. And don’t forget to check out the IMechE virtual library for your research needs. You’ll end up with a piece of work you can be proud of and still have the energy to celebrate afterwards!
Flying isn’t just for birds IMechE members in North Wales paid a visit to RAF Valleylast month, the jet training base for RAF and Royal Navy pilots. The excellent technical visit included a detailed engineering overview of both generations of the Hawk aircraft. This covered aspects such as service reliability and maintenance regimes, as well as examples of past service failures. Participants were shocked to learn that the single largest cause of aircraft damage on the station is from bird strikes! The station tour concluded with a visit to the Flight Line where the group experienced a Hawk returning from a sortie, a pilot debriefing and the plane being checked over and refuelled. IMechE hosts events like this all year round. Find out what’s happening in your local area.
New jobs...or new problems? An energy firm drilling for gas in Lancashire has found vast reserves of up to 20 trillion cubic feet under the county. While extracting the gas could create 5,600 jobs in the UK, campaigners have warned that investing in this fossil fuel could draw investment away from the UK's renewable industry. There are also arguments that the “fracking” extraction process produces harmful carbon emissions and health risks for local residents, while small earthquakes in the area earlier this year were linked to the same procedure. IMechE members suggest that a full risk analysis needs to be undertaken to determine if extracting the gas is the right decision for the UK. For now, however, the topic remains up for debate. Speak Out For Engineering

Want to win £300? Read on.

Speak Out For Engineering (SOFE) competition is back this year. Stand a chance to win £300 1st prize and a trip overseas & £200 second prize by presenting an idea, on a stage.

Do you see how people like Steve Jobs make their money? They can sell their ideas, innovations, technology or even simple belief, to a group of people who are not in the same field or background. To present an idea effectively, will make all the difference as to how you will succeed.

SOFE is a stage to where you are encouraged to speak to a non technical group of people on your technical ideas as a Mechanical Engineer. A good engineer is a speaking engineer. If you can speak, chances are, you'll go further than others who don't talk as effectively.

SOFE is basically a technical presentation where your audience will be assumed to be of a non-technical background audience. How do you get common John and Janes to understand your complex engineering idea? That is how you will be judged on. The ability to convey ideas and techniques so that everyone can understand and appreciate your ideas.

MTU Services (M) Sdn. Bhd Mechanical Workshop

This is a visit to MTU Services Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in Manjung, Perak where participants will participate in a day's worth of workshop on the field of Mechanical. There are a lot to learn and a lot to miss should you have not already register for the trip!

This talk however was done on the 19th October 2011 at 2-3pm in COIT, Uniten. There will be more talks coming up soon so please don't shy away from these talks as an hour or two at most could change the way you see your future, or at least give an idea of how you can make it better!

NDT Lab Visit

To students who are planning to have an outlook of how Non Destructive Testing is before opting for the elective course for their final year in Mechanical Engineering, and also for everyone else who just simply wants to learn, we will be having a visit to an NDT lab soon.

This visit will expose you to the equipment of an NDT as well as the methods often practiced by NDT specialists to test the integrity of structures.

Most of everyone have already or at least are currently undergoing the Engineering Materials course. You have all learnt about cracks and structural failures. Now see how you can detect these cracks and failures before they even become apparent to the human eye! An NDT is performed everytime a repair or manufacturing work is done to ensure that the structure in fabrication is in perfect condition with no initiation of failures to avoid unwanted incidents in the future. It is as natural to breathing as it is a process in fabrication.

Date and time will be notified soon once we have the confirmed details regarding the visit but please don't miss this chance as this trip is free for all IMechE members!

On the 30^th of September 2011, after months of planning, Uniten IMechE Student Chapter with the support and guidance from the Young Members Section of the IMechE Malaysia has organized a social gathering aptly named the YMS-IMechE Fellowship Evening, held at the prestigious Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

The event aimed at exposing the students to the broad possibilities that Mechanical Engineering has to offer and how they can contribute to their professional development as well as to the Institution once they have graduated. It is a shame that young engineers are lost after graduation with not a clear picture and idea of how they can enrich their engineering lives, working in dead end jobs and sometimes changing course altogether, wasting the 5 years of their education just because of the lack of exposure on how they can make it better, and greater.

This event was held so that these students can interact with one another from different universities and hopefully in the near future, collaborate in achieving something beneficial to them and the members of the Institution in this country. We hope to see more activities and programs involving the students from all student chapters in Malaysia and not only enclosed to one university at a time.

We were honored to have been presented with the presence of Prof. Dr. Teoh Kok Soo, the Chairman of IMechE Malaysia as well as be able to present the Young Member of The Year 2011 Award to Dr. Rajkumar Durairaj during the evening. We hope that in the future, there will be more achievements of the like from our very own Malaysian Chapter, and this, hopefully, will mark the beginning of such achievement.

Do something amazing – be a Mentor

We really value the time, hard work and support given by our mentors helping to develop the younger members of our profession. Each quarter, we celebrate the success of those mentors whose developing engineers become professionally registered.

A positive experience of mentoring encourages these newly elected Members to become mentors themselves.

Richard Francis of MBDA UK Ltd says:

"We have just completed our 100th (in October 2010) regular MPDS Monthly Mentor meeting (all minuted) chaired by Malcolm Rush the Company / IMechE Industrial Liaison Officer and some of our older mentors are now starting to call it a day as their current charges complete. I am happy to say that recently the younger element are now taking up the call and volunteering to help us mentor the new intakes. We do seem to be gradually branching out from the Mechanical Department and Mentoring graduates from other parts of our business under my umbrella either by Delegating Mentors or arranging for a local accredited Mentor and Emma Daniels was the first success story this year. I will need to rely on these new upcoming mentors to assist me to mentor these, whilst using delegated Mentors if not available.

New service - Career Developer Our new service, Career Developer, will provide you with a central repository for all your Continuous Professional Development (CPD) reports and activities. If you have a personal development plan, have been on a training course or have attended a conference or seminar that contributed to your CPD then you can upload that evidence to Career Developer. Use Career Developer to manage and develop your engineering career even if you change companies. Use your reports and activities as a basis for a Professional Review report by downloading our dynamic Professional Review report template. Career Developer is free to all fully subscribed IMechE members. No registration is required, just log in to My Account and upload your achievements.

Important information for MPDS mentors who are not currently members of the Institution To register as an MPDS Mentor with us, you need to be: a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer registered with the Engineering Council (or equivalent) If you are registered with us but are not currently a member of the Institution, you will need to ensure that your Engineering Council registration does not lapse. If it does, you will be unable to continue mentoring with us until you are reinstated. Your professional engineering institution is responsible for maintaining your EC registration, so please check with them if you have any doubts.

Tip of the month

As part of your journey towards professional registration, you may find yourself needing to take a break due to circumstances beyond your control.
Perhaps you are returning to education, going on maternity leave, or are transitioning between employers. As a result of these changes you may want to suspend your MPDS for a few months. If you find yourself in this situation, we are here to help.

Crossing the finish line

While the race for a good graduate job once you finish university is probably taking up a lot of your time, there are other races going on over the summer that you should be interested in! This month’s IMechE newsletter is a motor racing special, packed with all the news from the Formula Student and Greenpower racing events. We tell you how participating in events such as these can turbocharge your career prospects in an interview with Peter Leipold, Chief Executive of the victorious University of Stuttgart team. We also discuss the future of racing in our Topic of the Month.


	IMechE Member Profile Peter Leipold, University of Stuttgart, Chief Executive of Rennteam Stuttgart Would you recommend other students participate in Formula Student? Formula Student teaches you great soft skills: team work. being part of a project, discussing, communicating, keeping time schedules, keeping milestones, keeping all the issues of the project in mind (like cost issues, sponsorship,...) and leading a smaller group of students or the complete team. You also develop invaluable technical skills. After several months you are able to talk with professional engineers about solutions and designs for your car, and you get practical skills you can’t find in the classroom. You also gather a huge network of contacts from all over the industry, which becomes very useful once you graduate. On the other hand, you shouldn’t participate if you are only doing it to get your thesis work done. You’ll never feel as attached to the car as others who participate because they want to do motorsports. Being part of the team is hard work and if you come with the “wrong” expectations you will not make the most of it.

Stuttgart Storms to Victory Forget the battles between Hamilton, Alonso and Webber, the real racing drama occurred earlier this summer on the hallowed tarmac of Silverstone. With over 2,300 students in 125 teams from 34 countries participating in this year’s Formula Student event, there were plenty of fantastic engineering innovations on show. Teams were pitted against each other over four days at Silverstone, with cars judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance, and teams tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills. “Vorsprung Durch Technik” was the order of the day again this year, as the team from the University of Stuttgart took first place in the headline Class One race, but there were other winners too. Got the power There are other ways you can get involved in racing events, and accelerate your job hunt in the process. In June, around 50 STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths) Ambassadors descended on the rolling hills of Yorkshire to help run the Greenpower electric car racing event for local schools. Each team was given the same motor and battery capacity, and had to build the best electric racing car they could for a four mile endurance race. Check out a BBC news report on the event. Volunteering at events such as these is not only great fun; you also gain excellent experience of managing a group, and it looks fantastic on your CV. Find more information on volunteering in your local area to boost your career prospects.
Racing ahead Professional racing cars are already ruthlessly efficient machines. But with increasing pressure on oil supplies, engineers are looking to alternative fuel sources to power the race cars of tomorrow. With that in mind, we asked whether you thought Formula One would change much over the coming years as the teams adopt new technology such as that on show at Formula Student. IMechE member Paul Davis points out that other racing classes have already seen big changes over the past few years. He thinks Formula One could go the same way, but that the governing bodies need to relax some of the regulatory restrictions for it to happen. One thing is for certain; with the amount of engineering talent on display at events like Formula Student and Greenpower, the future looks good for racing!

First and foremost, Welcome back to UNITEN & Welcome back to the IMechE-UNITEN Student Chapter! Sorry for the late welcome message though.

Here are some updates prior to a dialogue session with the Student Representative Council (hereinafter referred as the SRC) which adjourned an hour ago. As a representative to our Mechanical Engineering society, it is my pleasure to give you all some important updates to what was tabled down in motion before the SRC members and fellow representatives from various clubs and societies in UNITEN.

With regards to the meeting room and discussion room at The Loop in block TB, they are now fully functional and bookings are to be made prior to having any meetings or discussion room as mention.
A membership drive for all clubs ans societies will be held on the 18th and 19th of May 2011. The membership drive is scheduled to start by 2000 hours and opening ceremony by 2030 hours.
Yearly activity planners complete with budgeting should be submitted latest by 31st of July 2011 to the SRC Exco of Clubs and Societies for the current committee line up and the next committee line up.
Annual General Meeting, AGM has been proposed to be held in August 2011 for all clubs as soon as the current SRC committee dissolves.
An inter-club bowling competition has been proposed to be on the 18th or the 25th of June 2011 to clubs and societies.
A highlight of participation of at least 1 foreign students in UNITEN in each club and society has been notified to all representatives.
A highlight of recurring issues in campus such as changing of lecturers and/or sections prior the the start of the semester without any notifications to students.
A highlight of clashing classes of the same subject at the very same time and lecturer at 2 different classes.
A highlight of information with regards to PTPTN loans for the new tri-semester system.
Encouragement of organizing joined activities with other clubs and societies.

	IMechE Member Profile Tom Francis, Technical Project Manager, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol Ltd What’s a typical day like at Saint-Gobain? I’m not sure if there is a typical day, which is what I most like about my job! We supply to the Hard Disk Drive industry who, in order to remain competitive, have to be demanding on their suppliers (which keeps me nice and busy). My job involves quite a bit of travel, mainly in the US and Asia, which is exciting. What was the interview process like? I had to do a number of online tests including mechanical reasoning and a personality test. I was then invited to a first interview which included a plant tour. My second interview included a presentation to a group of engineers, a brief interview by the Sales Director, another one by my line manager and one by the person I was replacing! What are your top tips for students looking for graduate positions this year? Tailor your application to each company; there is nothing worse than reading a generic covering letter as it shows little interest. Start looking at how you can make yourself stand out from the crowd; get some work experience or get actively involved in an organisation like the IMechE.

Engineer your way around the world The world of work is fast approaching, but that doesn’t mean you have to go straight into the job hunt race. In fact, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics RENCOL® is running a competition offering a pair of round-the-world tickets and £6k spending money to creative engineers. They’re asking engineering students in Great Britain to propose innovative, workable designs for new tolerance ring systems. Don’t know what a tolerance ring is? Engineers need to combine exceptional problem-solving skills with a bit of creative flair, so this is a great way to showcase your skills to the wider engineering world. Promote engineering and your career There are lots of ways to make yourself stand out from the crowd when applying for graduate jobs, but why not choose one that makes a difference too? IMechE Ambassadors are vital for the Institution’s commitment to promote engineering careers to young people in schools up and down the country. Becoming an Ambassador is also a fantastic way to show employers that you live and breathe engineering, and will make your CV even more impressive. Becky Adams, STEMnet (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Ambassador Co-ordinator, says "Working with young people is very rewarding and allows me to give something back to the community." Nuclear power – is it safe? With governments around the world reassessing nuclear power in light of the situation at Fukushima, we asked what you think; is nuclear power safe? Opinion was split like a Uranium atom. Many members, including Jamal Abdi, point out the problem of radioactive waste, while Steve Hill suggests that nuclear power only becomes dangerous when you take human error into account. On the other hand, Imelda McGrath believes it’s the future of sustainable energy as we run out of fossil fuels, while Matthew Garside highlights how robust nuclear power plants are, considering the relative lack of damage so far after such a severe earthquake. One key theme has emerged from the debate; engineers must rise to the challenge of ensuring that nuclear power is a safe and reliable energy source. What are Consulting Engineers?

A consulting engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical problems. Consulting engineers design materials, structures, machines and systems while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, safety and cost.

Consulting engineers are individuals who, because of training in one or more engineering specialties, are licensed professional engineers in private practice.

They serve private and public clients in ways ranging from brief consultations to complete design and coordination of a project. They are often the technical liaison between architects, process specialists, contractors, suppliers and the client.

A consulting engineer's specialty may be anywhere in the broad spectrum of engineering technology, including the fields of civil, electrical, structural, mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, geotechnical and highway engineering. A firm may also concentrate in specific fields such as soil mechanics, sanitation, hydrology or petroleum.

A consulting engineer can provide general consultation, feasibility reports, design, cost estimates, rate studies, project development, patent assistance and preparation of environmental impact statements.

Locating the best available consulting engineer and negotiating the fairest fee requires research, organization, evaluation and responsible decision making. Engineering value is obtained when the most qualified firm--engaged for a fair and equitable cost--develops a design which best serves the client by holding down present and future costs.

Apart from the technical aspect of engineering, we hope to expand the horizon of Uniten students to the vast field of consulting engineering.
